Working with PDF Files

Learn how you can manage the PDF files localization in Crowdin Enterprise.

Overview

Due to technical particularities, PDF files are not intended for editing but rather for viewing and printing. So, on import, to be further parsed and processed, PDF files, as well as a few other formats, are automatically converted into DOCX format.

Note: Crowdin Enterprise uses third-party sub-processors to convert PDF files.

PDF Types

There are two main types of PDF file formats: scanned PDFs and application-generated PDF files.

The application-generated PDF files are easier to process and require less pre-processing. On the other hand, scanned PDFs are mainly created from a paper version of the document using a document scanner, so the result of importing these files hugely relies on the quality of the scan. Still, it’s always good to review the imported result and compare it to the original document.

Use Editable Formats

There are numerous reasons why you might not have access to the original files your PDFs were generated from. But if you’re the person who generates the PDF files intended to be translated, or you can get original files out of which the PDFs are generated, we recommend exporting the content into editable file formats.

For example, use DOCX format for documents created in MS Word or other text editors, or if you have more complex PDF files created in Adobe InDesign, you can export them in IDML format.

Post-processing of Converted DOCX Files

Similarly, you will be able to perform some post-editing if your exported DOCX translation files would require some font style updates, formatting adjustments, etc. If the DOCX files converted from your PDFs require some adjustments, you can download them to your machine, make the necessary edits and update the DOCX files in your project with the adjusted files.
