Crowdin always strives to be as close and understandable to our clients as possible. Below you can find information about our most-used terms across the documentation and website.

Admin

User with full access to the Crowdin Enterprise account. Admin can invite new users to the organization, edit user access, manage vendors, and edit organization settings.

Assets

File formats that are not supported by Crowdin Enterprise (.png, .pdf, .jpeg, etc.) and uploaded to the system as the non-translatable files without preview. Translators can download assets, translate texts outside the system, and upload the translations back to the system. Learn more

Branch

Duplication of an object under version control (such as a source strings file or a directory tree) so that modifications can occur in parallel along multiple localization branches. In most cases, branches are used to allow translators to translate the texts in parallel with development to avoid deployment delay. Learn more

Client (for Vendors)

Organization that added you as a translation Vendor to its project workflow.

Contributor

Translator or proofreader working with the project.

Duplicated String

Each identical string uploaded after the master string. Learn more

List of specific terms or expressions often used in the project that helps to translate the content properly and consistently.

Inherited Manager

Manager that was automatically added to all organizational projects or all group projects in permissions granularity mode correspondingly.

Issue

Task or question related to the string translation process. Issues can be created by any user.

Process of adding custom language codes at translated file export, so they can correspond with the language codes you use internally.

Машинный перевод (МП)

Translations that are carried out by machine translation engines (e.g., Google Translate, Microsoft Translator). Machine Translations may be used for pre-translations or as tips for translators to speed up the translation process and make it more efficient. Learn more

Менеджер

Person that can manage projects, project groups, or organization overall. This user type can’t manage vendors, invite or manage users on the organization level, or edit organization settings.

Master String

Each unique string that was first uploaded to the project.

Permission Granularity Mode

Mode to manage project groups inside one Crowdin Enterprise account. It allows adding projects to specific groups or subgroups, working with workflow templates, translation memories, glossaries, and machine translations for each project group separately. Learn more

Personal Token

Alternative password to authenticate third-party applications and scripts into Crowdin Enterprise. Learn more

Public Page

Organization page with Crowdsourcing projects.

Text element used for localization that can be an individual word, word expression or sentence.

Translation Crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing is a practice of letting the crowd (community, product funs) to translate your product on a volunteer basis into several languages.

Translation Memory (TM)

Database that stores sentences, paragraphs, or segments of text that have been translated before. TM pre-translation reuses previous translations to improve translation process. Learn more

Vendors (Crowdin Store)

List of translation Vendors with which Crowdin currently cooperates.

Volunteer

Person who registered as a translator in a Crowdsourcing project.

Webhook

Notification method that helps you to collect information concerning the key events in your Crowdin Enterprise project, like completed translations or proofreading. Learn more

Workflow

Sequence of steps that content in your project should go through (e.g., pre-translation, translation, proofreading).

Workspace

Main page that contains the organizational projects and groups.

XLIFF format

XML-based format created to standardize the way localizable data are passed between tools during a localization process and a common format for computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool exchange. Translations are recommended to be downloaded in XLIFF.
